The angle, the orb and the window

A conjunction is two bodies at the same ecliptic longitude, allowed eight degrees of orb. Seen from Earth, Venus averages a little over a degree a day and Jupiter about a twelfth of that, so the pair closes at roughly one degree a day.

Sixteen degrees of orb at that rate means the aspect holds for something in the region of a fortnight, and the two meet in the sky about once a year on average. That is the honest frame for the page: everyone born inside that stretch of days has the aspect, so it is shared by a cohort measured in weeks.

What individualises it is the house, which needs a birth time, and the exact orb. A separation of one degree is a different statement from a separation of seven, and only one of those two people has anything unusual.

There is a further wrinkle. Venus turns retrograde for about forty days every nineteen months, and when a conjunction with Jupiter falls near one of those loops the two can meet three times over a few months. Anyone born inside such a sequence has the contact repeatedly reinforced, which is the one case where the aspect is genuinely emphatic.

What the pairing signifies

Venus in traditional practice governs attraction, taste, pleasure and the terms on which people get along. Jupiter governs increase, scope and the willingness to assume there is enough.

Joined, they are read as social ease and a generous relationship to comfort. The stock description is warmth, a good eye, and a reluctance to be austere about anything. The same mechanism described unsentimentally is a low tolerance for discomfort and a tendency to spend, both money and goodwill, at the rate at which it arrives.

The tradition calls both planets benefic, but that is a technical label from a specific system rather than a promise. A conjunction enlarges what it finds. If Venus is in a sign it struggles in, Jupiter enlarges that too.

One practical consequence is easy to check. Venus and Jupiter conjunct in the sky are the two brightest objects after the Sun and Moon, and a close conjunction is genuinely striking to look at. The astronomy is not the interpretation, but it does explain why this pairing acquired the reputation it has.

Sign, house and the rest of the chart

The sign is shared with everyone born around the same time, so on its own it does not describe an individual. It still colours the reading: this conjunction in Virgo is exacting about quality, in Leo it is theatrical, in Capricorn it is expensive rather than indulgent.

The house is where the aspect becomes personal. In the second it points at money and possessions, in the seventh at partnership, in the tenth at reputation and the pleasure taken in status. Two people born on the same day with different birth times will read very differently for exactly this reason.

Then look at what else touches those degrees. Saturn aspecting the pair supplies the restraint the conjunction lacks. Mars adds urgency. A conjunction that touches nothing else in the chart is a pleasant background condition, and the page will not pretend otherwise.
