The geometry and how often it happens

A trine is a separation of 120 degrees, read here with an orb of seven degrees. Two of them fit around the wheel, one on each side of a planet, so Venus makes two trines to Saturn in a typical year as it laps the slower body.

Signs 120 degrees apart always share an element. Fire trines fire, earth trines earth, and so on. That shared element is where the reputation of the aspect comes from: the two planets are working in a common medium and do not have to translate between them.

Nothing in the astronomy makes this configuration unusual. Venus is not tied to Saturn the way it is tied to the Sun, so the whole range of angles is available. What does concentrate the aspect is Saturn's pace: it holds one span of degrees for months, so births clustered in a season share the same trine, distinguished only by where Venus and the houses fall.

What agreement looks like between these two

Venus is read as pleasure, taste, attachment and the sense of what a thing is worth. Saturn is read as duration, structure and the acceptance of limits. The pairing is often described as awkward, but at 120 degrees the tradition reads the opposite: the appetite and the discipline want the same result and simply divide the work.

The usual descriptions are steadiness in affection, a plain and durable taste rather than a showy one, patience with slow returns, and a willingness to keep commitments after the initial enthusiasm has gone. In the older texts this is the aspect of the person who does not need to be reminded.

The standard caution about trines applies with full force here. Because the arrangement asks nothing of you, it is possible to have it and never draw on it. Squares and oppositions announce themselves by causing trouble. A trine sits in the background and waits, and plenty of charts with this one show no obvious sign of it at all.

The shared element gives the aspect its flavour before anything else does. In earth signs it reads as practical loyalty and a long view of money and property. In water it reads as emotional constancy. In air it reads as agreements kept because they were reasoned through. In fire it reads as enthusiasm that outlasts its own first burst.

Houses decide the subject. Venus in the fourth trine Saturn in the eighth places the whole thing in family and inheritance. Venus in the third trine Saturn in the seventh puts it in ordinary daily dealings with a partner. Neither of those is what the article above is describing until you look at your own chart.

Orb does the rest. A trine within a degree or two is worth taking seriously as a chart theme. At six or seven degrees it is barely audible, and given how quiet trines are to begin with, a wide one often makes no observable difference at all.

Retrogrades, transits and where the check comes in

Saturn is retrograde for something like four and a half months a year, and Venus for about six weeks every nineteen months, so a good share of these trines involve one or both moving backwards. Traditional readings treat a retrograde planet in a trine as making the support less visible from outside rather than removing it. That is an interpretive convention and not an observation of the sky, so treat it as such.

What can be stated plainly is the arithmetic. Saturn returns to its own natal degree about every twenty nine and a half years, and Venus crosses any given degree several times a year. Anyone tracking transits to a natal trine will meet those cycles constantly.
