Precise and widely shared at once

At noon in every year from 1930 to 2035, the Sun on 6 December has sat between about thirteen and two fifths and fourteen and four fifths degrees of Sagittarius. That is a tight figure and an easy one to check, which is why sun signs are what popular astrology is built on.

It is also the placement held in common by everyone born in roughly a month either side of a boundary. Nothing else in a chart is shared that widely. The Moon is shared by people born within a couple of days, the Ascendant by people born within a couple of hours in the same place.

That is the trade. The Sun is the only placement a stranger can name from a birthday alone, and it is the one that says least about the individual whose birthday it is.

What precision is good for

Stating the degree is not merely pedantry. Aspects, the angular relationships between planets that carry most of the specific content in a reading, are measured in degrees, and whether an aspect counts at all depends on how many degrees away it is from exact.

The degree also fixes the face. Fourteen degrees is inside the second decan of Sagittarius, from ten to twenty, which the Chaldean order gives to the Moon and the triplicity scheme gives to Aries and so to Mars. Tradition reads the first as a need for familiar ground and the second as opinions turned into positions and defended immediately.

Both of those are interpretation, and the page marks them as such. The degree behind them is not, and neither is the arithmetic that turns a degree into a face.

Why the calendar keeps its place

People sometimes expect a fixed date to wander through the zodiac, since the year and the calendar are not the same length. A tropical year is close to a quarter of a day longer than a common year, which would move any date about a day every four years if nothing corrected for it.

The leap day is the correction. The Sun runs about six hours late against the calendar in each ordinary year, then jumps back by nearly a full day when February gains a date, so the position for a fixed date oscillates instead of drifting.

A slow residue survives, roughly a day per century, which is why the Gregorian rule skips the leap day in century years not divisible by four hundred. That is the whole reason a birthday sits on a stable solar longitude rather than a moving one.

Where the individual part of a chart lives

The Moon covers around thirteen degrees a day, so on 6 December it can be in either of two signs depending on the hour of birth. It is the placement the tradition ties most closely to need, habit and reaction, and a date narrows it only halfway.

The Ascendant is entirely out of reach from a date. The zodiac turns past the eastern horizon once every twenty four hours, so the rising degree changes by about a degree every four minutes, and it decides which house every planet in the chart falls into.
