Approaching a line and stopping short

Signs are cut into three faces of ten degrees each. The first face of Scorpio runs from zero to ten, and on 1 November the Sun is inside it with roughly a degree to spare. Noon positions from 1930 to 2035 fall between about 8.1 and 9.5, so even the latest of those years leaves half a degree of margin. Since the Sun covers slightly under a degree a day, that margin is worth about half a day of motion, which is comfortable enough that the hour of birth does not come into it.

That matters because the very next date does cross. On 2 November the noon range spans the boundary itself, which makes the face a year dependent answer rather than a fixed one. This date is the last on which the first face applies whatever year you were born in, and that clean answer is worth having.

How a date holds a longitude for a century

The Sun advances a little under a degree a day, so a shift of a single day in the calendar moves the answer by about one degree. The reason the answer does not wander further than that is the leap year rule.

An ordinary year is about a quarter day short of the orbital period, so the Sun reaches this longitude roughly six hours later each year. After three such years the accumulated lag is close to a day, and the leap day removes it. The pattern repeats indefinitely, so the position on a given calendar date oscillates rather than drifting. The whole span across the modern era stays under a degree and a half wide. That is small enough for the figure to be quoted as a working number, and large enough that it can straddle a face boundary on the dates where one happens to fall nearby.

What the opening face is credited with

The Chaldean order of faces gives the opening ten degrees of Scorpio to Mars. The triplicity count gives it to Scorpio itself, which resolves to Mars in the traditional scheme and to Pluto in the modern one. Agreement between the two counts is the exception rather than the rule. Most faces are handed to different planets by the two schemes, and practitioners then choose a count or hold both in view.

Traditional texts read a face ruled by the same planet as its sign as an undiluted version of the sign, and for Scorpio that means the qualities usually attached to it arrive without a second influence to temper them. Later degrees of the sign are read differently, because the second face brings in the Sun by one count and Pisces by the other. This is interpretive material and it is offered as such, not as a claim about anyone born on the date.

The three quarters of a chart still missing

A sun sign is one placement out of the ten or so a chart normally lists, and it is the slowest moving of them, which is exactly why a whole calendar date maps onto it neatly. Everything faster is left open.

Mercury and Venus are never far from the Sun, so they are narrowed but not fixed. The Moon shifts about half a sign in a day. The Ascendant and the houses depend on the birthplace and the minute, and they turn over completely in twenty four hours. If two people share this birthday and nothing else, they share the least individual item in the chart and differ on everything below it.
