Why date ranges are approximate and this is not
Newspaper tables say Aries runs from 21 March to 19 April. The Sun does not consult the table. It crosses into a new sign at a specific minute that moves by up to a day and a half from year to year, because the tropical year is not a whole number of days and the calendar corrects for that in jumps.
For most birthdays this makes no difference. For anyone born within about thirty-six hours of a boundary it decides the answer, and it is why cusp births get two different signs from two different sites. This calculator works from the actual solar position at your birth moment.
What a cusp actually is
There is no cusp in the astronomy. The Sun is either in one sign or the next, with no overlap and no blended zone. What people mean by a cusp birthday is a birthday close enough to a boundary that the popular tables cannot be trusted.
Once you have the real position, the ambiguity disappears. The calculator gives the degree, and a Sun at zero degrees twenty minutes of Taurus is in Taurus, however Aries the person feels.
That said, a Sun in the first or last degree of a sign is worth reading against the neighbouring sign as well. Not because the boundary is fuzzy, but because a body at the very start of a sign has not yet settled into it, and one at the very end is on its way out.
What the Sun describes
The Sun is what you are driving at over a lifetime. Not your personality in the round, which is the whole chart, and not your instincts, which are the Moon. It is the direction of travel, the thing you are trying to become competent at, the project.
Because horoscope columns use it alone, it carries a reputation for being either the whole answer or a party trick. It is neither. In a chart it is one placement among ten, and it is usually the one a person recognises last, because becoming what your Sun describes takes decades rather than happening automatically.

The house the Sun falls in
Sign describes the manner; house describes the department of life. A Leo Sun in the sixth house pours its warmth into daily work and craft; a Leo Sun in the tenth pours it into public standing. Same sign, very different lives.

Dignity, and what it means for the Sun
The Sun rules Leo, is exalted in Aries, in detriment in Aquarius and in fall in Libra. Those are descriptions of fit rather than grades.
In Leo the Sun has no friction to overcome, which produces clarity of purpose and very little capacity to question it. In Aquarius it is working in a sign that evaluates from a distance, which is uncomfortable for a body whose function is to be the centre. In Libra it operates through comparison, which makes settling on a single direction genuinely harder.
None of that predicts success. A Sun in fall with strong aspects outperforms a well-dignified Sun with none, and dignity is one input among several.
How long the Sun spends in a sign
Almost exactly a month, which is why the sun sign is the least personal placement in a chart: it is shared with everyone born in the same four weeks. What makes it yours is the degree, the house and the aspects.
