The first runs 9 February to 3 March, beginning in Pisces and ending in Aquarius, twenty two days. The second runs 10 June to 4 July, from Cancer back into Gemini, twenty four days. The third runs 7 October to 28 October, from Scorpio back into Libra, twenty one days.
That is unusual. In many years at least one retrograde stays inside a single sign. In 2027 all three step back, which means Mercury enters a sign, retreats out of it, and comes back, covering the same degrees three times over roughly nine weeks each time.
Why a back-step is read differently
When a planet crosses the same degrees three times, the traditional reading treats that stretch as material returned to rather than passed through. It is one of the few places where the interpretation follows straightforwardly from something real: the transit genuinely does repeat, and if those degrees touch your chart the contact happens three times instead of once.
The practical consequence is that a 2027 retrograde affects a wider band of the zodiac than a contained one. A retrograde inside Pisces touches Pisces degrees only. One that runs from Pisces back into Aquarius touches both, and anyone with placements in the late degrees of Aquarius gets the repeat as well.
How the station times are found
A station is where the derivative of ecliptic longitude with respect to time crosses zero. Rather than look that up, the page samples Mercury's longitude either side of a series of candidate moments, watches for the daily change to flip sign, and bisects until the moment is pinned to within a minute.
The sampling step is finer for Mercury than for the outer planets, because Mercury moves fast enough to reverse quickly and a coarse step could step over a station entirely. The positions come from the same model the birth charts use, so this table and any chart on this site agree by construction.
Set against the rest of the year
2027 is a busy year for retrogrades generally. Mars is retrograde from 10 January to 1 April, which happens only about every twenty six months and lasts far longer than any Mercury period. Jupiter is retrograde until mid April and Saturn from August to Christmas Eve.
That context is worth having, because Mercury gets blamed for a great deal that is simply what the sky does most of the time. The outer planets are retrograde for months on end every year, and nobody notices.
