The rule that most calculators skip
The Chinese year begins at the second new moon after the December solstice. That lands new year's day between 21 January and 20 February, and it moves substantially from one year to the next. It fell on 23 January in 2012, on 25 January in 2020, on 10 February in 2024 and on 17 February in 2026.
Western calculators almost always cut the year at 1 January instead. Everyone born in that six week window then receives the following animal rather than their own, which works out at roughly one birthday in eight. The example that makes it concrete is 1 February 1988, filed as a Dragon by a Gregorian table and in fact a Rabbit, because the 1988 new year did not arrive until 17 February.
Outside those weeks the two methods agree, which is why the mistake survives. The check on this page computes the real boundary for your birth year and answers from it.
Monkey years and the element that named them
The Monkey returns every twelve years. Recent Monkey years are 1980, 1992, 2004 and 2016, with 2028 next. Each runs from its own new year date to the day before the following one, so it always sits across two Gregorian years.
Beneath the animals runs a cycle of five elements, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, each covering two consecutive years. The ten years of the element cycle and the twelve of the animals only come back into step after sixty, so an animal carries a given element once in a long lifetime. 2016 was a Fire Monkey year and 2004 a Wood Monkey. In ordinary usage the element is part of the year's name, and English summaries that give only the animal have quietly dropped half of it.
Polarity, the raft, and the character reading
The Monkey is a yang animal. In the Great Race it could not swim the river alone, so it built a raft with the Goat and the Rooster and the three cleared the weeds together, the Monkey stepping ashore ninth.
The tradition reads the sign as cleverness in search of a problem. The Monkey is described as inventive, quick to learn, sociable and very good at getting round obstacles, and in the same account as restless, easily bored, and willing to be less than straight when a shortcut is available. It is also read as hard to hold to a commitment. All of that is inherited interpretation of a birth year, describing a whole cohort rather than any one person, and it is offered here as what the tradition says rather than as a finding.
Trines, the opposite animal, and the western system
The twelve sort into four trines of three animals spaced four apart. The Monkey shares its trine with the Rat and the Dragon, a set read as quick-witted and comfortable with risk. The opposite animal, six places round the cycle, is the Tiger, and the tradition treats that as a match of two temperaments that will not defer to each other. As with every pairing, the elements of the two years are weighed before anything is concluded.
One last point, stated plainly. This is a separate system from western astrology, built on the year of birth in a lunisolar calendar rather than on the Sun's position on a given day. They take different inputs, answer different questions and are not two readings of the same thing, so there is no reconciling to be done between a Monkey year and any western sign.
Questions people ask about this
Which recent years are Monkey years?
1992, 2004 and 2016, with 2028 next in the sequence. Each opens at the lunisolar new year in January or February, so the start date differs by weeks between them.
What element was the 2016 Monkey year?
Fire. The 2004 Monkey year carried Wood, and because the element and animal cycles only realign every sixty years, each combination comes round once in a long life.
I was born in late January. Is that a Monkey year?
It depends on the year, since new year can fall as early as 21 January and as late as 20 February. The widget above finds the boundary for your birth year rather than guessing.
How did the Monkey come ninth?
The legend has the Monkey, the Goat and the Rooster crossing the river together on a raft they built, clearing weeds as they went. The Monkey came ashore after the Goat.
Which animal opposes the Monkey?
The Tiger, sitting six places away in the cycle. The tradition reads opposites as a clash of manner, which is an interpretation about temperament and not a forecast.
Does a Monkey year change my western horoscope?
No. The two systems use different calendars and different inputs, one the year and the other the day, so neither adds to nor cancels the other.
