Where the boundary actually falls
A Chinese year opens at the second new moon following the December solstice. That puts new year's day somewhere between 21 January and 20 February, changing from year to year with the Moon rather than sitting still. It fell on 27 January in 1990, on 5 February in 2000, on 23 January in 2012 and on 17 February in 2026.
Calculators that hand out animals by the Gregorian year get the six weeks at the start of every year wrong, which is about one birthday in eight. Take someone born on 1 February 1988. Split the year at 1 January and they come out a Dragon. The 1988 new year was not until 17 February, so they were in fact born a Rabbit, in the tail of the preceding year. Ox years and their elements
An Ox year arrives every twelve years. Recent ones are 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009 and 2021, with 2033 next in line. Each of those years starts at the new year date in January or February and closes the day before the following one.
Running under the animals is a cycle of five elements, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, with each element covering two consecutive years. Ten years of elements against twelve of animals means a given combination comes back only every sixty years. The 2021 Ox year was a Metal Ox; the previous Ox, in 2009, was an Earth Ox, and the same Metal pairing will not return until the 2080s.
The pairing matters for how the year is named. An Ox year is never just an Ox year in the tradition, it is a Metal Ox or an Earth Ox, and the element is taken to shade the reading as much as the animal does.
The character reading and the race
The Ox is a yin animal despite the strength attached to it. In the Great Race it was first into the river and would have finished ahead of everything else, but it carried the Rat across without noticing and lost the lead in the final stride, taking second place.
The traditional reading follows from that: patient, methodical, willing to keep going long after the interesting part is over, and reliable to the point of being taken for granted. The same tradition calls the Ox slow to change its mind and unimpressed by novelty, which is the same trait described from the other side. It is an interpretation handed down rather than anything demonstrated, and it is worth holding it as one.
Trines, the opposite animal, and the other zodiac
The twelve animals fall into four trines of three, animals four apart in the cycle, taken to work in a similar way. The Ox is grouped with the Snake and the Rooster, a set read as deliberate and exacting. Directly across the cycle, six places away, is the Goat, and that pairing is the one the tradition marks as the hardest work.
The animal zodiac and western astrology are separate systems built on different clocks. The animal comes from the year in a lunisolar calendar; a western sign comes from where the Sun stood on the day of birth. Neither is a translation of the other, and it is quite normal to find that the two readings say unrelated things, because they were never asking the same question.
Traditional compatibility also looks at the element pair as well as the animals, so two accounts of the same match can differ. What would change a reading is the element, not the strength of feeling either side brings to it.
