The six weeks that get misfiled
The Chinese year begins at the second new moon after the December solstice, which places new year's day between 21 January and 20 February. Recent examples: 25 January in 2020, 29 January in 2025, 17 February in 2026, 6 February in 2027.
Almost every western calculator uses 1 January instead, so everyone born in that six week window comes out with the wrong animal, about one birthday in eight. The Rabbit is where this shows up most memorably. Someone born on 1 February 1988 is usually told they are a Dragon, because 1988 was a Dragon year in the Gregorian sense. The 1988 new year did not begin until 17 February, so that birth belongs to the Rabbit year that started in February 1987. The widget above finds the real boundary before it answers.
Rabbit years and their element
The Rabbit returns every twelve years. Recent Rabbit years are 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011 and 2023, and 2035 is next. Each one opens at the lunisolar new year and closes the day before the following new year, so the year sits across two Gregorian ones.
The five elements, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, run through the calendar in pairs of years underneath the animals. Since the element cycle takes ten years and the animal cycle twelve, a particular animal and element meet once every sixty years. 2023 was a Water Rabbit year; 2011 was a Metal Rabbit.
In practice the element is part of the name. A year is called a Water Rabbit or a Metal Rabbit, and readings that quote only the animal have dropped half of what the tradition uses.
How the tradition reads the Rabbit
The Rabbit is a yin animal. In the Great Race it could not swim, and the usual account has it crossing the river by hopping between stepping stones and a floating log, arriving fourth by wit rather than strength.
The character reading is built on that. The Rabbit is described as careful, courteous and observant, someone who takes the route with fewest confrontations and prepares more than shows. The same tradition calls it conflict-averse to a fault and slow to commit when a decision might upset someone. These are inherited readings, not findings, and a person born in a Rabbit year is not obliged to any of them.
Where the reading is applied matters too. The animal is a year label, so it is said to describe a cohort rather than an individual, which is a much weaker claim than a daily horoscope makes.
Groupings, opposite and the western system
The tradition sorts the animals into four trines of three, each spaced four apart. The Rabbit sits with the Goat and the Pig, a set read as gentle and domestic in outlook. The opposite animal, six places along, is the Rooster, and the tradition treats that pairing as a mismatch of manner rather than of intent.
Chinese and western astrology are unrelated systems. The animal follows from the year of birth in a lunisolar calendar; a western sign follows from the Sun's position on the day. Because they take different inputs and make different claims, nothing needs to be reconciled between them, and a reading that appears to combine them is usually just placing two separate labels side by side.
The practical use of the trines is as a conversation starter about pace and manner. What would change the reading is the element of each year involved, since that is taken to soften or sharpen the animal.
Questions people ask about this
Which years are Rabbit years?
1987, 1999, 2011 and 2023 in recent memory, with 2035 next. Each starts at the lunisolar new year in January or February, not at the turn of the Gregorian year.
Is someone born on 1 February 1988 a Dragon?
No. The 1988 new year fell on 17 February, so that date is still inside the Rabbit year that opened in 1987. It is the standard example of the 1 January error.
What element was the 2023 Rabbit year?
Water. The 2011 Rabbit year carried Metal, and because the element and animal cycles only coincide every sixty years, a Water Rabbit is rare in any one lifetime.
How did the Rabbit finish fourth?
The legend has it unable to swim the river, so it crossed on stepping stones and a drifting log, reaching the far bank behind the Rat, the Ox and the Tiger.
Which animals share the Rabbit's trine?
The Goat and the Pig. Trines are groups of animals four places apart that the tradition reads as working in similar ways, which is an interpretation rather than a rule.
Is the Rabbit the same as the Cat?
In the Vietnamese version of the cycle the fourth animal is the Cat rather than the Rabbit. The dates and the year boundary are the same; only the animal name differs.
