How the traditional ranking is built
Sun sign compatibility is decided by the angle between two signs. Same element makes a trine and is called harmonious; two signs of the same modality make a square and are called difficult; opposite signs make an opposition and are called complementary.

Why this ranking is a weak instrument
It uses one placement out of roughly forty. The Moon describes what settles someone, Venus what attracts them and Mars how they pursue it, and none of those has to sit in the sun sign. Two Aries can have completely different comparisons with the same person.
Aries is the sign most often told it is incompatible with almost everything, largely because directness reads badly in a ranking built on ease.
