Three separate reductions, then one addition. Reduce the month to a single digit. Reduce the day to a single digit. Reduce the year to a single digit. Add the results and reduce that figure if it has two digits.
Totals of 11, 22 and 33 are exceptions and are left intact wherever they occur.
The competing approach, adding all the digits of the date at once, produces a different answer for some dates. It is the ordinary reason one calculator disagrees with another, and on this page it has a second consequence: a 33 that should have been preserved is silently turned into a 6.
Try 30 April 1968. The month reduces to 4, the day gives 3, and the year gives 1 plus 9 plus 6 plus 8, which is 24 and then 6. The three figures added are 4, 3 and 6. Setting them out this way takes a moment and removes any question about how the total was reached.
What 6 is taken to cover
Six is read through obligation and care. Households, dependants, teaching, repair, the work of keeping something in good condition. The tradition treats it as the domestic and communal number, more concerned with what is owed than with what is wanted.
Its stated difficulty is control dressed as help: interfering, taking on burdens that were not offered, keeping others dependent, and quietly counting what has been given. Martyrdom is the word the older sources reach for, and they do not soften it.

Thirty three is another matter. It arises from so few dates that some practitioners leave it out of their scheme entirely and treat every such total as a 6. If you have been told you are a 33, you have been given a reading that not everyone in the field uses.
What is safe to say about how often each number appears is the ordering rather than exact shares. Single digits are ordinary, 11 is uncommon, 22 is rarer, 33 is rare enough to be optional. Anything more precise depends on which birth years are being counted.
