Reduce the month on its own, the day on its own and the year on its own, each to one digit, then add the three and reduce the total. Wherever 11, 22 or 33 appears, it stays.
Adding all the digits of the date in a single pass is the alternative most calculators use quietly. It is not the same procedure, and for some dates it lands somewhere else. That single difference in method is the ordinary reason people are given two different life paths.
