The layer below the sign
Every sign divides into three faces of ten degrees, called decans, giving thirty six around the zodiac. They come from Egyptian star lists used to mark the hours of the night, and they were absorbed into Hellenistic astrology as a way of subdividing a sign that would otherwise be treated as a single block.
This is the layer that tells two people with the same sun sign apart. A Sagittarius born in the first days of December and one born a fortnight later are in different faces with different traditional rulers, and almost no page about a birthday mentions it.
At noon on 28 November the Sun has been between about five and a third and six and two thirds degrees of Sagittarius in every year from 1930 to 2035. That is squarely inside the first face, with several degrees of margin at either end.
Mercury against Jupiter
The Chaldean order assigns the faces in a fixed planetary sequence, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, repeating from zero degrees of Aries. Counted through to the twenty fifth face, the opening decan of Sagittarius comes out as Mercury.

These are not two shades of one idea. Jupiter and Mercury are the standard pairing of the wide view against the close one, so a description of this face taken from an unnamed source could be built on either. That is worth checking before deciding a text contradicts itself.
What the tradition reads into it
Under the triplicity reading, the sign meets itself and nothing is mixed in. Older sources describe that as Sagittarius plain: an appetite for the general case, for distance both physical and intellectual, and for arguments about what things mean rather than about what happened.
Under the Chaldean reading, Mercury supplies exactly what Jupiter usually skips, which is the specific example and the habit of checking. The face is then described as conviction that has to state its evidence, and the same person is read as harder to talk out of a position because the position came with workings attached.
Both readings are interpretation and are marked as interpretation here. What is measurable is the degree, and the face follows from the degree by simple division. A birthday page that skips the measurement and jumps to the adjectives has skipped the only part that could be checked.
How much weight a decan should carry
Decans are genuinely old, older than some of the material laid over them, but they are a refinement rather than a foundation. A decan reading that flatly contradicts the sign should not be allowed to outrank it, and a good practitioner treats the face as shading rather than as a second sign.
The technique also applies to more than the Sun. Any planet or angle falls in a face, and the Ascendant is read this way as a matter of course, since its degree comes straight from the birth time. That is where decan divisions separate two charts most sharply, because the rising degree moves by about a degree every four minutes.
