Mars is the part of a chart that decides how you go after something, and how you behave when blocked. It spends about six weeks in a sign, so it is genuinely personal rather than generational.

What Mars governs

Mars describes how you go after something and how you behave when blocked. It covers drive, temper, physical energy, competitiveness and appetite, and it is the placement that decides whether a chart's ambitions ever leave the planning stage.

Where Venus describes what attracts you, Mars describes the pursuit. The two are read as a pair for that reason, and a chart where they disagree produces the familiar pattern of being drawn to one kind of person and behaving in a way that suits another.

Why it is genuinely personal

Mars spends about six or seven weeks in a sign, which puts it firmly among the personal planets. Your Mars sign is shared with people born in a narrow window rather than with a whole generation, unlike the outer planets.

The exception is when Mars turns retrograde, which happens for about two months every two years. During those periods it can sit in one sign for six months or more, and a cohort several times larger than usual ends up sharing it.

Retrograde Mars

Roughly one person in twelve is born with Mars retrograde, and the calculator tells you if you are one of them.

The conventional reading is anger turned inward rather than expressed, and a drive that operates on its own schedule rather than on demand. People with the placement frequently describe a delay between wanting something and acting on it, and a tendency to be underestimated by people who mistake that delay for passivity.

It is common enough that reading it as a defect would be indefensible. What it reliably describes is a different timing, not a smaller engine.

Dignity

Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, is exalted in Capricorn, in detriment in Libra and Taurus, and in fall in Cancer.

ConditionSignsHow it behaves
RulershipAries, ScorpioDirect in Aries, strategic in Scorpio; no friction either way
ExaltationCapricornDisciplined and long-horizon; the most effective placement
DetrimentLibra, TaurusSlow to act; Libra weighs first, Taurus is hard to start and hard to stop
FallCancerIndirect and defensive; fights for others more readily than for itself

These describe method rather than strength. Mars in Cancer is not a weak Mars; it is a Mars that will not attack head-on and is remarkably difficult to outlast.

The house it falls in

Sign describes how you pursue; house describes what you pursue. Mars in Aries in the second house pours that directness into earning; Mars in Aries in the ninth pours it into argument and belief.

Because the sign is shared with everyone born in a six-week window, the house is what makes the placement yours. It needs a birth time.

Mars and anger

The association is real and it is usually overstated. What Mars actually describes is the mechanism: whether irritation arrives fast and leaves fast, accumulates quietly, gets converted into work, or is not registered as anger at all until much later.

Fire signs express it immediately and forget it. Earth signs convert it into effort. Air signs argue. Water signs hold it, and Mars in water is the configuration most likely to produce someone who is genuinely surprised to discover they have been furious for a month.

None of that predicts behaviour. A chart with strong Saturn contacts to Mars describes someone who has learned to hold the mechanism in check, and that is visible in the aspect list rather than in the sign.

Reading it without a birth time

The sign is settled by the date except on the roughly one day in forty-five when Mars changes sign. The retrograde status, the dignity and every aspect to the slower bodies are also unaffected.

What you lose is the house and any aspect to the ascendant or Midheaven. Mars conjunct the ascendant is one of the most visible placements in a chart, so if your time is approximate it is worth checking whether that contact is in play.

Common questions

What does Mars describe?

How you go after something and how you behave when blocked. Drive, temper, physical energy and competitiveness, and whether a chart's ambitions ever leave the planning stage.

Is retrograde Mars bad?

It affects about one person in twelve. The usual reading is a delay between wanting something and acting on it, which is a different timing rather than a smaller engine.

Is Mars in Cancer weak?

It is in fall there, which describes method rather than strength. It fights indirectly and defensively, will not attack head-on, and is remarkably hard to outlast.

Does Mars determine my temper?

It describes the mechanism, not the behaviour. Fire expresses immediately, earth converts it into work, air argues, water holds it. Saturn contacts to Mars describe someone who has learned to check the mechanism.

Why read Mars with Venus?

Venus describes what attracts you and Mars how you pursue it. Where the two conflict you get the common pattern of being drawn to one kind of person and behaving in a way that suits another.

Do I need a birth time?

Not for the sign, except on the roughly one day in forty-five when Mars changes sign. For the house and for any contact to the ascendant, yes.
