Free Saturn Return Calculator

Around twenty-nine and a half, Saturn arrives back where it started. When it retrogrades near that degree the crossing happens three times, which is why the experience rarely feels like a single day.

What a Saturn return is

Saturn takes about twenty-nine and a half years to orbit the Sun. When it comes back to the exact degree it occupied at your birth, that is a Saturn return, and it happens at roughly twenty-nine, fifty-nine and eighty-eight.

The arithmetic is not approximate. Your Saturn sits at a specific degree and minute, and Saturn arrives back at that degree on specific dates, which this calculator gives you. What is approximate is everything said about what it means, and it is worth keeping the two apart.

Why it is almost never one date

Saturn turns retrograde for about four and a half months each year. When that retrograde period falls near your natal degree, Saturn crosses it three times rather than once: forward, back, and forward again, spread across nine to fourteen months.

Most tools give you a single date, which is the first crossing and is misleading. The whole passage is read as one event. That is why people describe a Saturn return as a year rather than a day, and why the experience so often has a shape: something raised, something worked over, something settled.

The calculator lists every pass of every return in your lifetime, so you can see whether yours is a single crossing or a triple one before you plan anything around it.

ReturnTypical ageWhat it is conventionally read for
First28 to 31The end of an extended adolescence; commitments that stick
Second57 to 60A reckoning with what was built, and what to keep
Third86 to 89Reached by fewer people; read as a summing-up

Why the ages vary

Saturn's orbit is elliptical, so it moves faster at some points than others. Depending on where your natal Saturn sits, your first return can arrive anywhere between about twenty-eight and thirty-one. Any source that says twenty-nine flat is rounding.

The retrograde pattern adds more variation. Two people born a month apart can have first returns that differ by a year in their exact timing and by a great deal in their shape, one a single clean crossing and the other a drawn-out triple.

What natal Saturn tells you about it

The return brings Saturn back to a specific place in your chart, and that place determines what the passage is about. Saturn in the seventh house returns to the house of partnership; Saturn in the tenth returns to the house of career and standing.

The sign matters less than the house here, since everyone born within two or three years of you shares the sign. The house is yours, and it needs a birth time.

The aspects natal Saturn already carries matter too. A Saturn squared by the Moon returns to a difficult configuration; a Saturn trined by Venus returns to a supported one. The calculator shows those aspects alongside the dates for exactly that reason.

What actually tends to happen

The honest answer is that a Saturn return coincides with a period when things that were being deferred stop being deferrable. That is vague enough to sound like fortune telling and specific enough to be checkable, and it is roughly what the reports describe.

Commonly cited: leaving or committing to a relationship, leaving or committing to a career, moving country, having children, ending a long friendship, finishing or abandoning a qualification. What those share is not their content but their permanence. Saturn is associated with structure, and a return is when the existing structure is tested for whether it will hold another thirty years.

People who describe theirs as uneventful usually mean nothing dramatic happened, and frequently describe substantial changes when asked specifically. That is worth noting before deciding your own was quiet.

Preparing for one, if that is even possible

The useful preparation is not defensive. What tends to make a return difficult is having built something on a foundation you already suspected was wrong, and the passage is where the suspicion becomes unavoidable.

The practical version: know the dates, arrange some slack into those months if you can, and expect to be asked whether an arrangement is worth continuing. Treating the period as a threat generally produces worse decisions than treating it as an audit.

Other returns worth knowing

Jupiter returns about every twelve years and is read as a period of expansion rather than reckoning. Uranus opposes its own natal position at around forty-two, which is the astrological version of a midlife crisis and is at least as well documented as the Saturn return.

Chiron returns at about fifty. The solar return, which happens annually on your birthday, is a different kind of tool: a chart for a year rather than a passage. Each of those has its own calculator on this site.

Common questions

When exactly is my Saturn return?

Between about twenty-eight and thirty-one, depending on where your natal Saturn sits, because Saturn's orbit is elliptical and it moves faster at some points than others. The calculator gives your dates rather than the average.

Why are there three dates?

Saturn turns retrograde for about four and a half months a year. When that falls near your natal degree it crosses three times rather than once, spreading the return across nine to fourteen months.

Is a Saturn return always difficult?

It coincides with a period when deferred things stop being deferrable, which some people experience as difficult and others as clarifying. It is not a misfortune and it is not optional.

What is my Saturn return about?

The house natal Saturn occupies. Saturn in the seventh returns to partnership, Saturn in the tenth to career and standing. The sign is shared with everyone born within two or three years of you; the house is yours.

Do I need a birth time?

Not for the dates, which depend only on Saturn's natal degree. For the house, which is what the return is about, yes.

What comes after the first one?

The second around fifty-nine and the third around eighty-eight. The Uranus opposition at about forty-two and the Chiron return at about fifty sit between them and are at least as well documented.
