What counts as a stellium

Three or more of the main bodies gathered in a single sign or a single house. That is the working definition, and it is not universal: some practitioners require four, and some count only the traditional seven bodies rather than the modern ten.

This calculator uses three and counts the ten main bodies, which is the commonest convention. It checks by sign and by house separately, because a group spread across two signs can still share a house and a group in one sign can be split between two houses.

What it does to a chart

A stellium concentrates. Whatever it lands on starts running the chart, and the areas the concentration was taken from go correspondingly quiet.

The usual experience people report is disproportion: an area of life that takes up far more attention than it objectively warrants, and difficulty understanding why others do not organise themselves around it. That is a fair description of what the geometry does.

It also produces a chart with fewer aspects than average. Bodies packed into thirty degrees are all conjunct each other and cannot easily trine or square anything, so a stellium chart is often quiet everywhere except at the pile-up.

Sign or house, and which matters more

A sign stellium is shared with everyone born nearby in time, at least in part. Three outer planets in a sign belong to a whole generation and say very little about a person.

A house stellium is yours, because houses need a birth time and rotate completely every day. If you have both, the house version is the one carrying the personal reading.

Why most charts do not have one

Ten bodies distributed across twelve signs will occasionally cluster, but the default is spread. A chart without a stellium is not lacking anything; it describes weight distributed rather than concentrated, which the dominants section describes better than a pile-up would.

Tools that find a stellium in almost every chart have usually lowered the threshold to two bodies or included asteroids. Both make the finding meaningless.

Reading one properly

Start with the ruler of the sign or the cusp, not with the bodies. A stellium in Virgo reports to Mercury, and wherever Mercury sits is where the whole concentration discharges. That is the single most useful step and the one most often skipped.

Then look at what aspects the group from outside. A stellium with nothing touching it is self-contained and tends to stay unexamined; one squared by an outer planet is under pressure and gets worked on whether the person wants that or not.

Finally, note which houses are empty. A concentration in one place implies absence elsewhere, and the empty areas are often where the person is unusually relaxed rather than deficient.

The Sun and Mercury problem

Mercury never travels more than about twenty-eight degrees from the Sun, and Venus never more than about forty-seven. That means Sun, Mercury and Venus fall in the same sign frequently, by orbital mechanics rather than by anything meaningful.

A stellium made only of those three is the weakest kind, and a good deal of stellium writing does not mention this. The calculator names the bodies involved so you can judge for yourself whether the grouping says anything.

Without a birth time

Sign stelliums are found normally, since they depend only on the date. House stelliums are not available at all, and that is the half that would have been personal.

The result says which mode it ran in rather than presenting a partial search as a complete one.
