When people guess your sign wrong
Plenty of people read as a sign the Sun never touched. The usual reason is a loaded sign elsewhere in the chart: a rising sign, or a cluster of planets, carrying more weight than the Sun does.
This calculator ranks all twelve signs by weight rather than naming one. The margin between the top two is what tells you whether the chart genuinely has a dominant sign or simply has a Sun.
What contributes
Every body adds its own weight to whichever sign it occupies. The Sun and Moon count most, the personal planets next, the outer planets least.
The rising sign adds a large share, because a sign holding the ascendant is doing a great deal of visible work. The Midheaven adds a smaller one.
The weights are printed in the ranking table. They are a convention rather than a measurement, and showing them is the only way to make the result arguable.
Why it is often not the sun sign
The Sun is one body. A sign holding the Moon, Mercury and Venus together outweighs it, and that configuration is common because Mercury and Venus never stray far from the Sun.
The rising sign is the other frequent winner, since it carries the ascendant's weight plus anything sitting near it. A chart with three bodies in the first house usually has its rising sign at the top of this table.

Reading the margin
This matters more here than for the element or modality balance, because twelve categories divide the weight thinly. A leader with fifteen per cent of the total in a twelve-way split is genuinely dominant; one with ten per cent is barely ahead of the field.
Charts with no dominant sign are common and are not deficient. They describe weight spread across the wheel, which usually reads as someone harder to characterise quickly.
What to do with the answer
The useful move is to compare it with your Sun. Where they agree, the chart is unusually consistent and people probably guess your sign correctly.
Where they disagree, the dominant sign is generally what strangers read and the Sun is what you are actually driving at. That gap explains a great deal of the experience of feeling misdescribed by your own sun sign.
Not the same as a stellium
A stellium is three or more bodies in one sign, which is a structural fact. A dominant sign is a weighted score, and a sign can top the ranking without holding three bodies if the ones it holds are heavy enough.

Without a birth time
The rising sign and Midheaven drop out entirely, and for this calculation they are among the largest single contributors. Results with and without a birth time frequently disagree, and the page says which mode it ran in.
