Free Mercury Retrograde 2026 Dates and Times

Three retrograde periods in 2026, and unusually all three fall in water signs. The dates below are computed from the change in Mercury's longitude either side of each station, not copied from a table.

The three periods

The first runs from 26 February to 20 March, entirely within Pisces, and lasts twenty three days. The second runs from 29 June to 23 July in Cancer, twenty four days. The third runs from 24 October to 13 November in Scorpio and is the shortest at twenty days.

None of the three crosses a sign boundary, which is less common than it sounds. Mercury usually retreats far enough to step back into the previous sign at least once a year, and when it does, the retrograde reads differently: the same degrees get covered three times and the earlier sign gets revisited.

Why all three are in water

Mercury laps the Earth about every 116 days, so three retrogrades fit comfortably into a year with a little left over. Because 116 days is close to a third of a year but not exactly, each retrograde falls roughly a third of the way around the zodiac from the last, and the leftover makes the whole pattern drift slowly backwards.

Signs of the same element sit exactly a third of the circle apart. That is why the retrogrades of any given year tend to cluster in one element, and why the element changes every few years as the drift accumulates. In 2026 the drift has the whole set sitting in Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio.

The stations and the shadow periods

A station is the moment the apparent motion reverses. The times in the table are UTC and are found by narrowing in on the point where the daily change in longitude crosses zero, which pins them to within a minute.

Astrological practice usually extends each period at both ends. The pre-retrograde shadow starts when Mercury first reaches the degree it will later retreat to, and the post-retrograde shadow ends when it finally passes the degree where it turned. Each adds roughly two weeks, which is why some calendars make 2026 sound as though it is retrograde for a third of the year.

What is being claimed and what is not

The dates are exact and the astronomy is not in dispute: Mercury does not reverse, we overtake it on the inside and the line of sight does the rest. That part of this page is checkable against any ephemeris.

The tradition attaches meanings to the period, and those are conventions rather than findings. No study has found an effect on technology, contracts or travel, and there is no mechanism by which an apparent change of direction could produce one. This site keeps the two apart on purpose.

If you want to know whether a given retrograde touches your own chart, the degrees are what matter, and the birth chart calculator will tell you.

Questions people ask about this

When is Mercury retrograde in 2026?

Three times: 26 February to 20 March in Pisces, 29 June to 23 July in Cancer, and 24 October to 13 November in Scorpio. All times in the table are UTC.

How long is each 2026 retrograde?

Twenty three days, twenty four days and twenty days respectively. The length varies because Mercury's orbit is noticeably eccentric, so the geometry of each pass differs.

Do any 2026 retrogrades cross a sign boundary?

No, and that is worth noting. All three begin and end in the same sign, so none of them produces the back and forth across a cusp that makes some retrogrades read differently.

Why are they all in water signs?

Because Mercury's synodic period of about 116 days puts each retrograde roughly a third of the zodiac from the last, and signs of the same element sit exactly a third apart. The element shifts slowly over the years as the pattern drifts.

What is the Mercury retrograde shadow in 2026?

Roughly the fortnight before each station retrograde and the fortnight after each station direct, when Mercury is crossing the same degrees for the first and third time. It is a convention rather than an astronomical boundary.

Is there a fourth retrograde in 2026?

No. Three is the usual count and a fourth only appears when the timing catches an extra one at the start or end of a calendar year.
