What Mercury governs
Mercury describes how you take information in and how you put it back out. Reading, arguing, explaining, note-taking, the speed at which you follow a point and the register you default to when writing an email.
It is the most practical placement in a chart in the sense that it describes a faculty you use every hour. It is also the one people recognise fastest, because everyone has an opinion about how they think.
Three possible signs, never more
Mercury orbits inside Earth's, so from here it never appears more than about twenty-eight degrees from the Sun. That constrains it to your sun sign or one of the two neighbours.
| Position | How it tends to read |
|---|---|
| Same sign as the Sun | Thinking and identity point the same way; conviction, less self-questioning |
| Sign before the Sun | Thinks in the terms of the previous sign; often reflective, slightly out of step |
| Sign after the Sun | Thinks ahead of where the identity is; quick, sometimes impatient with itself |
Because Mercury cannot be far from the Sun, it can never oppose or square it. Any tool showing that has made an arithmetic error.
Retrograde Mercury at birth
Mercury turns retrograde three or four times a year for about three weeks each, so roughly one person in five is born with it. That is common enough that treating it as an affliction would be indefensible.
The consistent report is a processing style that runs internally before it runs outwardly: understanding arrives complete rather than incrementally, and explaining it to someone else takes a second pass. People with the placement often describe being thought slow at school and quick later.
It also describes a habit of revisiting. Second drafts, rereading, changing one's mind after the conversation has ended. None of that is a defect and some of it is an advantage.
Combust, cazimi and the old distinctions
Traditional astrology paid close attention to how far Mercury sat from the Sun. Within about eight degrees it was called combust and considered weakened, its own voice drowned by the Sun's. Within seventeen minutes of exact conjunction it was cazimi, in the heart of the Sun, and considered unusually strong.
Modern practice mostly ignores both. The calculator gives you the exact distance so you can apply the distinction if you want to, and the observation people report most often is that a very close Sun and Mercury produces someone whose thinking and identity are hard to separate.
Dignity
Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo and is exalted in Virgo, which makes it the only planet ruling and exalted in the same sign. It is in detriment in Sagittarius and Pisces and in fall in Pisces.
The two rulerships describe opposite strategies. Gemini goes wide and connects; Virgo goes narrow and corrects. A Mercury in Gemini and a Mercury in Virgo are both at home and behave nothing alike.
In Sagittarius and Pisces, Mercury operates in signs that prefer the general to the particular, which produces someone good at the sweeping point and impatient with the detail. That is a friction, not a fault.
The house it falls in
Sign describes how you think; house describes what you think about. Mercury in Gemini in the sixth house pours that quickness into work and systems; the same Mercury in the ninth pours it into belief and argument.
Because Mercury spends only two or three weeks in a sign, its sign is already fairly personal. The house makes it specific, and it needs a birth time.
Reading it without a birth time
The sign is settled by the date except on the roughly one day in twenty when Mercury changes sign, which is more often than for most bodies because it moves quickly and reverses several times a year.
The retrograde status, the distance from the Sun and every aspect to the slower bodies are all unaffected. What you lose is the house and any contact with the ascendant.
Common questions
Can Mercury be in any sign?
No. It never appears more than about twenty-eight degrees from the Sun, so it falls in your sun sign or one of the two neighbours. Three possibilities, never more.
Was I born with Mercury retrograde?
Roughly one person in five was. The calculator tells you. The usual report is understanding that arrives complete rather than incrementally, and a habit of revisiting.
What does combust mean?
A traditional term for Mercury within about eight degrees of the Sun, considered weakened. Within seventeen minutes it is cazimi and considered strong. Modern practice mostly ignores both; the calculator gives the distance so you can apply it if you want.
Why can Mercury never square my Sun?
Because it is never more than twenty-eight degrees away, and a square is ninety. Any tool showing one has made an error.
Is Mercury in Gemini better than in Virgo?
Neither. Mercury rules both and is exalted in Virgo, and the two describe opposite strategies: Gemini goes wide and connects, Virgo goes narrow and corrects.
Do I need a birth time?
Not for the sign, except on the roughly one day in twenty when Mercury changes sign. For the house, yes.
